Mayan Spindle

Mayan Spindle

A Mayan spindle is a traditional hand-spinning tool rooted in the Indigenous cultures of Central America. Characterized by its horizontal design, the spindle sits on a low stand or support while the spinner uses one hand to draft the fiber and the other to spin the spindle in a smooth circular motion. This rotation draws the fibers into thread or yarn with remarkable efficiency and speed, making it especially well-suited for spinning cotton and other fine fibers.

In many Indigenous communities, children begin learning to use the Mayan spindle at a very young age, developing fine motor skills and a deep connection to cultural traditions through the practice of spinning. The Mayan spindle is not only a functional tool but also a living symbol of generational knowledge and textile artistry.

During trade shows, Dan has had the privilege of meeting individuals who learned to use this versatile spindle firsthand. He values these conversations with people who have personal experience using traditional fiber tools, and he thoughtfully incorporates their shared insights into the ongoing development of his own spindle designs.
