Handcrafted Flax Beater / Scutching Knife
For years, Dan Tracy Designs has made flax beaters, traditionally known as scutching knives, for fiber artists processing flax by hand. We are excited to finally make them available through our webstore after a customer asked us to offer them online in preparation for this year’s Flax & Linen Symposium.
A flax beater is used during the traditional preparation of flax fiber, helping remove the woody material from the flax so the long fibers can continue on their journey toward becoming linen. Each Dan Tracy Designs Flax Beater is handcrafted from wood and shaped to provide a comfortable, functional tool for this fascinating traditional process. We offer two styles:
Classic Flax Beater
The Classic Flax Beater is Dan’s original take on the traditional scutching knife used in flax preparation. Its broad, smoothly shaped body provides a generous working surface for beating and scraping away the woody material from processed flax while leaving the long fibers ready for the next steps toward linen.
Each Classic Flax Beater is individually handcrafted from Cherry, Maple, or Oak, with softly rounded edges and a comfortable narrowed handle. Because every piece is made from natural wood, the grain, color, and character of each beater will be unique.
- Approximately 18¾ inches (47.6 cm) long
- Approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide at its widest point
- Approximately 6.4–12.8 ounces (181–363 grams)
- Available in Cherry, Maple, or Oak
Streamline Flax Beater
The Streamline Flax Beater is a narrower variation of our traditional flax beater, developed in response to customer requests for a slimmer and more contoured tool. Also known as a scutching knife, it is used during flax preparation to help remove the woody material from the stalks while leaving the long fibers ready for the next stages of processing into linen.
Unlike the broad, continuously curved profile of our Classic design, the Streamline features a more sculpted shape with a defined handle, narrower working body, and tapered tip. This gives it a different feel in the hand while still providing the sturdy wooden surface needed for traditional flax processing.
- Approximately 17¾ inches (45.1 cm) long
- Approximately 2½ inches (6.4 cm) wide
- Approximately 6.4–12.8 ounces (181–363 grams)
- Available in Cherry, Maple, or Oak
- $50.00 plus shipping and handling
Because each Flax Beater is handcrafted from natural wood, the grain, coloring, exact dimensions, and weight will vary slightly from piece to piece. Choose the style and wood that appeal to you, then put it to work as part of the centuries-old process of transforming flax into linen.
